NEW Call for Papers
Security and Economic Development in the Canadian North
The Northern Review invites submissions—from community & business leaders, policy makers, as well as from established & emerging scholars—of previously unpublished research articles, commentaries, and case studies.
This will be the third in a series of three special issues, funded in part by the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, exploring the broad theme of economic development in the Canadian North, including socio-economic factors. Our primary geographic focus is the Territorial North, and the secondary focus is Inuit Nunangat and the Provincial Norths.
For this issue, we particularly encourage submissions exploring the intersection of security & defence, broadly conceived, with economic development. For example:
- Impacts of Arctic security, defence, and related infrastructure projects on northern communities, peoples, environments, and prosperity
- Northern and Indigenous partnerships, participation, and ownership in security projects and dual-use infrastructure initiatives
- Food innovation and security
Other topics such as venture capital and northern business development; and northern tourism (including winter, adventure, Indigenous) are also welcome.
Deadlines
October 15, 2026 for submission of abstracts or expressions of interest
April 30, 2027 for submission of research papers
Summer 2027 for commentaries, case studies, book reviews
