Indigenous Economic Development Corporations and Cooperatives in the Canadian North
For a special issue to be published June 2025

The Northern Review invites submissions—from community & business leaders, policy makers, as well as from established & emerging scholars—of previously unpublished research articles, commentaries, and case studies for a special issue exploring economic development in the Canadian North.

We welcome content exploring any aspect of economic development, and particularly addressing this issue’s theme: Indigenous Economic Development Corporations and Cooperatives in the Canadian North
Topics may include:

  • Northern Indigenous Economic Development Corporations and Cooperatives (IEDC)
  • Assessment of Arctic Cooperatives
  • Small Cooperatives in the Canadian North
  • Investment and Employment by the IEDCs
  • Artistic and Cultural Cooperatives in the Canadian North
  • Collaboration in the Tourism Sector

Ideas and expressions of interest should be sent to Managing Editor Deanna McLeod for early review by the editors of The Northern Review. Submissions will, in accordance with standard Northern Review policy, be subject to peer and editorial review.

This will be the first in a series of three annual special issues exploring the broad theme of economic development in the Canadian North, including socio-economic factors. Our primary geographic focus is the territorial North, and the secondary focus is Inuit Nunangat and the provincial Norths.

Future issues in this series will focus on the intersection of security and economic development in the Canadian North, small business development in the Canadian North, resource development and the future of the Canadian North, and infrastructure mega-projects and the development of the Canadian North. Expressions of interest or essay submissions on these topics are also welcome at any time.
